Lecanora argentata (Ach.) Degel. [as G.Nilsson]
     
  Ark. Bot. 24A: 78 (1931); Parmelia subfusca f. argentata Ach., Methodus 169 (1803). T: “...cum priori [...in cortice arborum]”; lecto: H–ACH 1189A, fide I.M.Brodo & O.Vitikainen, Mycotaxon 21: 284 (1984).  
     
  Thallus continuous, yellowish white to yellowish grey or whitish grey, epruinose. Soredia absent. Prothallus whitish to greyish white or not visible. Apothecia sessile, 0.4–1.0 mm diam.; disc pale to dark red-brown, epruinose; margin concolorous with the thallus, thin, entire, ±verrucose to crenulate. Cortex hyaline, gelatinous, inspersed with numerous small crystals, 15–25 µm thick laterally and 20–45 µm thick basally. Amphithecium with large crystals insoluble in KOH (pulicaris-type). Parathecium hyaline, with numerous small crystals soluble in KOH, 10–15 µm thick. Epihymenium reddish brown, K–, without crystals (glabrata-type), c. 10–15 µm thick, with a 2.5 µm thick hyaline layer above. Hymenium hyaline, 55–70 µm thick. Hypothecium and subhymenium hyaline. Paraphyses sparingly branched apically, c. 2 µm wide; apices capitate, to c. 4 µm wide, reddish brown. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 10.5–15.5 × 5.5–8.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K+ yellow, C–, Pd+ yellow; containing atranorin (major), gangaleoidin (major), chloroatranorin (minor), 4-dechlorogangaleoidin (minor) and norgangaleoidin (minor).
     
  A corticolous species of exposed habitats in eastern Qld and N.S.W. and in Vic. It has a cosmopolitan distribution.
